What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?
Bed bugs get their name from the fact that they sleep in your bed. Their eggs look like little specks of dandruff, but adult bed bugs feed on blood and need regular blood to survive.
Adult bed bugs are only ¼ of an inch long when adults, and typically as small as 2-3mm when infants. They range from brown to reddish-brown after the feed and fill their bodies with blood.
Since it can be extremely difficult to spot bed bugs, they often go unnoticed. They are able to be transported in luggage, through old furniture, pillows, and even clothes.
What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?
The bites from a bed bug are extremely itchy. They make them look blotchy and can be all over your body. It is said that they feed in the rules of three “breakfast, lunch, and dinner”. These bugs come to feed each night in the wee hours of the morning.
The most common signs of an infestation are marks on your body, but it is good to note that not everyone reacts to these bites. This allows them to lay eggs undetected, and spread their infestation very easily.
Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation
- Red bite marks: You will find itchy red spots on your body. These begin small and then swell each morning.
- Small black dots: Typically these spots are found within your mattress stitching. These are fecal spots and can be found in mattresses, upholstery, and walls.
- Molt skins and eggs: Both of these will appear pale white.
Bed bugs: Although hard to spot, seeing actual bed bugs are an obvious sign of an infestation.
- Musty Smell: Bed bugs give off a musty, unpleasant odor. If your bedrooms smell funny you may have a bed bug infestation.
